Western Province forward Ernst van Rhyn says he is learning from having to move between lock and flank. DYLAN JACK reports.
The former Junior Springbok captain has started three matches and come off the bench twice in Western Province’s Currie Cup campaign.
However, Van Rhyn has had to adapt quickly to a utility role that has seen him shifting from blindside flank to lock.
‘At this stage, there is not really a specific one I can say I prefer,’ Van Rhyn said. ‘Right now it is about getting as much experience as I can in different positions.
‘These days the No 4 lock and No 7 flank play very similarly. Getting the privilege of playing for the team is the big thing, and getting to know how to play [different] positions as much as possible and gaining knowledge from some of the other players.
‘I just want to play. Each position has a role in the team and I am just trying to fulfill that.’
The youngster said he has not yet had the opportunity to pick the brain of Springbok Pieter-Steph du Toit, who has had to perform a similar role.
‘I have not had the chance to ask him [Du Toit] about it directly. I was not a part of the Super Rugby squad and after that, he went on tour with the Springboks. It’s definitely something to keep in mind. He is someone who can give plenty of advice.
‘Both positions suit me well in the sense that when I play flank I can play in the wider channels, while a No 4 plays a bit tighter, so each helps me to better my game in a unique way.’
