Coach Swys de Bruin says the Lions must ride their luck as they prepare for a third consecutive home Super Rugby quarter-final.
With the Waratahs losing to the Brumbies earlier in the day, the Lions’ victory over the Bulls resulted in them not only sealing the South African conference but also finishing second on the overall table.
This means if the Lions win their quarter-final against the Jaguares on Saturday, they will host a semi-final at Ellis Park.
REPORT: Lions hit back to claim conference
‘Luckily we have a good home record against the Jaguares and we are at home, so that is in our favour,’ De Bruin said. ‘They will come with a totally different challenge than what we faced against the Bulls. Their system is different and the way they play off their flyhalf [Nicolás Sánchez] is different. So we will have to put in a massive defensive effort this week.
‘The challenge is on them. It is week three for them on tour and we know how week three is on tour. But they have travelled a lot, so they are used to it. It is a good thing that they are in Durban and now have to travel to altitude but that won’t be the vital thing.
REVIEW: Lady luck smiles on Lions, Sharks
‘In the team talk, I said everything is going our way and we need to use it. From last week, results have gone our way, so we have got to use it. I believe this is a blessed team and if we stick to what we are doing the results will come, and it happened today.’
