Centre Henco van Wyk was named the U18 Craven Week Hero of the Day after scoring a try in the Lions’ 13-5 defeat to Western Province.
The Hero of the Day award is based on a standout moment of the day and is not necessarily given to the best player.
With Western Province 6-0 ahead in the first half, Van Wyk showed an eye for a gap as he cut inside onto a pass from flyhalf Declan Raubenheimer and sprinted clear for the Lions’ only score of the game.
‘It is such a big privilege for me after such a closely contested match,’ Van Wyk said. ‘But all the honour has to go to my teammates.’
REPORT: WP hold off Lions to reach ‘final’
‘Henco was chosen because of the try he scored,’ said former Bok wing Akona Ndungane. ‘I felt Western Province were favourites coming into this game based on how they performed on Monday.
‘The Lions scoring put Province on the back foot and they could have won the game, but the yellow card cost them.’
