Du Toit wins big at WP awards

Pieter-Steph du Toit was named Most Valuable Player at Western Province’s awards ceremony on Tuesday.

Apart from scooping the MVP gong in his first season at the union, the lock also won the inaugural Composure and Capability award, intended for a senior player who thrived under pressure throughout the season.

Hooker Bongi Mbonambi was named WP Forward of the Year as well as inaugural Bounce Player of the Year, an award given to players who have made significant improvements in their game.

Both Du Toit and Mbonambi were unable to personally collect their awards as they are with the Springbok squad ahead of Saturday’s Test against the All Blacks.

Centre Huw Jones was another big winner at the ceremony, with a string of excellent Super Rugby and Currie Cup performances earning him a Test call-up for Scotland in June. Jones walked away with the coveted Players’ Player of the Year award and the Most Promising Back award.

Fullback Cheslin Kolbe was named the Best Back for his consistent performance this year and Kobus van Wyk took out the Most Promising Senior Forward award.
