New Sharks director of rugby Gary Gold says he'll bring an attacking philosophy to Durban.

Under Jake White, the Sharks came under criticism for their style of play, where they led the stats from kicks from hand during the Super Rugby season. Speaking to Ballz Radio, Gold said that while White deserved credit for the success that he brought to the Sharks, he would be taking a different approach.

'I'd really like us to go and really show our attacking philosophy in a big way,' said Gold. 'We've got some absolutely outstanding players at the Sharks, we've got a solid pack and great game breakers out wide.

'Super Rugby is not the cold and wet of Europe. You're not going to win games 9-6 by having a kicker. You're going to have to score tries. That's what people want to see.'

The Sharks attempted a more ball-in-hand approach during the recently concluded Currie Cup, but with limited success. All too often any good work was undone by handling errors, where they topped the charts. Gold says that with the correct coaching the Sharks will be able to develop their game plan and play a more expansive game.

'We've got a good platform to build on with good basics. Under Brendan in the Currie Cup and then what Jake did – and I think that's a great foundation.

'We've got the players to do that [play attacking rugby]. I want to play a hell of a lot more attacking brand of rugby so that we're winning games because we're outscoring teams by the amount of tries we're scoring.

'If we're going to be able to play that brand of rugby, we're going to coach it. And that will give them the confidence.'
