Meyer: ANC on my side

Heyneke Meyer says he has the backing of a number of government officials to stay on as Springbok coach.

Meyer has been widely criticised for the Boks’ failed World Cup campaign, while his team selections have come under scrutiny as far as transformation is concerned.

But despite calls for Meyer to be dismissed from his job, it is believed that his contract, allegedly worth R5-million a year, has been extended until 2019.

In an interview with Afrikaans newspaper, Rapport, Meyer remained defiant and said he has the backing of the ANC and those who slate him should have a long, hard look at themselves.

‘I get unbelievable support from our politicians. I received SMSes from leading ANC members saying, “Well done, we are proud of you”,’ Meyer told Rapport.

‘People who question my ability as coach, should look in the mirror and ask themselves if what they are doing and saying are for the right reasons. I sleep well at night, but those guys have hidden agendas.

‘Giving up is not part of my vocabulary. I always tell my kids that Meyers never give up. Not on other people, not on ourselves and not on each other. I will never walk away from something I believe in.'
