Ireland sweat on O’Brien

Flanker Sean O'Brien is likely to miss Ireland's three-Test series against the Springboks in June due to a hamstring injury.

O'Brien tore his hamstring in Ireland's 10-9 Six Nations defeat to France in February, but after making significant progress in his rehabilitation programme, he was declared fit to play in Leinster's last game of the regular season against Treviso two weeks ago.

The 29-year-old, however, broke down in training when he suffered a recurring injury and now looks set to sit out Leinster's Celtic Pro12 semi-final against Ulster and Ireland's tour of South Africa.

'Sean O’Brien broke down in his rehab and we will have a further update on him later this week as to what’s going to happen,' said Leinster defence coach Kurt McQuilkin. 'It’s just unfortunate.'

Two other injury concerns from the Leinster camp that could effect Ireland are prop Cian Healy's ongoing neck and knee problems and fullback Rob Kearney's ankle injury.

'We are continuing to manage Cian Healy and Rob Kearney is making good progress, so we will just have to wait for a further update,' McQuilkin said.
