An outstanding all-round display enabled the Lions to romp to a 43-5 win over the Blues on Saturday, according to SARugbymag.co.za's Opta-powered stats.
The Lions came up trumps in almost every stat. They made 381m to 276, beat 18 defenders to nine and executed eight clean breaks to four. Beyond those attacking stats, the Lions had to make 104 tackles compared to the Blues’ 67, and yet they only missed nine in contrast to the 18 missed attempts from the visitors.
The Lions’ kicking display was also spot on in the rainy conditions. With 45 kicks in play, it was the accuracy of these that really stood out. A host of contestable kicks were highly effective, while Elton Jantjies created two tries with a beautiful cross-kick and a deft chip.
Yet the foundation for the victory in the wet-weather conditions was importantly laid up front, with the Lions winning 100% of their scrums, while they disrupted the Blues’ lineout ball and used their maul to great effect.
While it was a virtually flawless team effort from the Lions, Jantjies produced a brilliant tactical performance at flyhalf, while Lionel Mapoe not only scored a hat-trick of tries, but made 46m, completed five tackles and effected two clean breaks.
