Maties beat UWC 19-5 in the Cup final of the Varsity Sevens in Cape Town on Monday.
It was the University of Stellenbosch's third title in the abbreviated format of the game.
Kyle Steyn opened the scoring for Maties after an inside pass eliminated two UWC defenders.
On the stroke of half-time, the Villagers crowd erupted as Nieyaas Johnson received the ball out wide and dummied past Carlisle Nel, who couldn’t pull him down despite a diving attempt.
Maties extended their lead in the second half when Paul de Wet stepped past Monre Lingerveldt to score under the posts and make it 12-5.
Rohaan Adams was yellow-carded for a high tackle on Maties’ Carlisle Nel with just over two minutes to play. Paul de Wet then stepped around Herman du Plessis to put the result beyond doubt.
