De Jager helps Sarries to glory

SARugbymag.co.za looks back at the past weekend's Anglo-Welsh Cup final match, which involved SA players.

Saracens overturned a narrow half-time deficit to beat holders the Exeter Chiefs 23-20 and clinch the Anglo-Welsh Cup. Eighthman Ernst Joubert and flank Nick de Jager retained their places in the Sarries starting lineup, following good performances against the Northampton Saints in the semi-final.

Two penalties to one gave Exeter a 6-3 lead at the break after Saracens were reduced to 14 men. But despite the numerical disadvantage, the Londoners hit the front courtesy of three unanswered tries, including one from De Jager to lead 20-6.

Indiscipline, however, cost Saracens another yellow card and Exeter capatilised, scoring two converted tries to level the scores. But just as it looked like the game was headed for extra-time, Sarries worked their way into Chiefs territory, before milking a late penalty to clinch the cup.
