SA Rugby plans to appoint Rassie Erasmus as a hands-on director of rugby.
The former Bok flank could be unveiled by SA Rugby as early as next month.
According to the Sunday Times, should Erasmus agree terms, Springbok coach Allister Coetzee would have to report to him as the highest-ranking coach in the country.
Erasmus is currently the head coach at Munster, and his release depends on the Irish province finding a suitable replacement for him.
According to the Sunday Times' source, finding someone to take control of the national team from Coetzee has become a priority as SA Rugby needs to restore confidence in the Bok brand after a nightmare 2016 season.
Were he to be appointed, Erasmus would be a hands-on, on-field director of rugby, who would develop playing patterns. During his last stint in the position, Erasmus had a purely administrative role.
'We do need someone to drive a process that standardises basic skills and we also need a clearly defined path for our players,' said SA Rugby president Mark Alexander.
