The Reds have signed former Wallabies flanker George Smith on a two-year deal from next season.
Smith last played Super Rugby for the Brumbies in 2013, before heading back to France to play for Lyon in 2014-15. He then moved to English Premiership side Wasps for the 2015-16 season, where he was their standout player, picking up the Supporters’ Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards.
Smith also bagged the Players’ Player of the Year at the 2016 RPA Players’ Awards and the English Premiership’s Forward of the Season award for the 2015-16 season.
The 35-year-old flanker, who has made 111 appearances for Australia, is set to join Japan Top League side Suntory Sungoliath ahead of the 2016-17 season, but will meet up with his new Super Rugby franchise ahead of the 2017 season after an agreement was reached with Suntory.
‘The body feels great and the experience in England has been outstanding,’ Smith said. ‘I’m really looking forward to playing Super Rugby again. I want to make a positive difference wherever I go and I feel I can do this with the Reds.’
