Kirwan quits Blues

John Kirwan has stepped down from his role as Blues head coach with immediate effect.

Kirwan, who took charge of the Auckland-based franchise in 2013, announced he will not seek reappointment for another season following the Blues' failure in this year's Vodacom Super Rugby competition.

During his three-year reign, the Blues had a 35% overall win rate, won only two away matches and managed just three victories in 2015. Despite this, Kirwan was initially determined to retain his position, but has since admitted his resignation was prompted after discussions with family and friends over his future.

'It's time for someone else to take over. I love this club and for it to be successful in future it needs total cohesion from all stakeholders,' said Kirwan.

'The Blues are heading in the right direction, but there are just too many things in my way stopping the club moving forward. I wish my successor all the best,' he added.

The Blues are said to be targeting another former All Black, Tana Umaga, who's currently in Italy as assistant coach of New Zealand in the U20 World Championship.
