Griquas thumped the Griffons 43-24 in their fourth round Currie Cup Premier Division qualifier, while there were also wins for SWD and the Valke.
The Griffons opened their account in the second minute when wing Norman Nelson dived over the line and flyhalf Colin Herbert converted. What followed was total domination by Griquas, who ran in four unanswered first-half tries by lock Jonathan Adendorf, wing Ederies Arendse and flank Carel Greeff (two). Wing Nico Scheepers kicked two conversions.
The Griffons, through fullback Tertius Maarman, narrowed the gap to 10 points, but then conceded two touchdowns, as first Greeff grabbed his hat-trick before Francois Brummer scored a try and kicked the conversion.
The hosts went on to score twice in the final quarter, but centre Howard Mnisi’s try sealed the match and five log points for Griquas.
In Wellington, SWD outscored Boland three tries to two to win 21-17. Fullback Eric Zana once again shone for struggling Boland, with a try, two conversions and a penalty to his name, but it wasn’t enough.
It was a high-scoring affair in Kempton Park where the Valke beat Border 54-40, to register their second win in the qualifiers. Fullback Juan Kotze scored one of their eight tries and converted six of them, while Border grabbed a bonus point thanks to their six touchdowns.
