The importance of accurate goal-kicking was again exemplified in the Cheetahs’ 30-29 win over the Force, according to SARugbymag.co.za's Opta-powered stats.
There were seven tries scored in Bloemfontein, four by the hosts and three by the visitors. But in the end, the outcome of the closely fought match hinged on who kicked better under pressure and the Cheetahs prevailed.
Fred Zeilinga was perfect off the tee, but the Cheetahs flyhalf was successful with only four out of his six attempts at goal – two penalties and two conversions – for a 66% conversion rate.
The Force’s kickers had a combined success rate of 62.5% off the tee, as they skewed two conversions and a match-defining penalty in the final minute of the game.
