The Sunwolves’ defence cost them dearly against the Waratahs in Tokyo, according to SARugbymag.co.za’s Opta-powered stats.
Take nothing away from the Waratahs, who won 57-12. They were superior in every aspect and deserved their victory, but the Sunwolves didn’t make it easier for themselves.
The hosts made only 84 tackles and slipped 28 of those. They continually infringed at the breakdown, conceding seven penalties. Their ball protection wasn’t of the highest quality either, as the Waratahs won 12 turnovers.
This sloppy defence allowed the Waratahs to make 677 running metres and beat 28 defenders.
