Both the Sharks and the Stormers will rely on their respective No 6s to give them an edge at the tackle this Saturday, writes JON CARDINELLI.
Neither Nizaam Carr nor Marcel Coetzee is a traditional openside flanker. Carr has played much of his senior career at No 8, while Coetzee is also a better ball-carrier and defender than an out-and-out fetcher.
Nevertheless, both No 6s should influence the outcome of the tackle contest at Newlands, and ultimately the game.
Carr was named Man of the Match for his efforts against the Bulls last week. The versatile loose forward has thrived since moving from No 8 to 6, and his speed, footwork, and exemplary handling in the tackle has allowed the Stormers to up the tempo of their attack. That said, Carr has not shirked his defensive responsibilities, and will be backed to stand up to the Sharks' forward assault this weekend.
Coetzee was one of the standouts in the Springboks' most recent Test against Scotland in Port Elizabeth. He dominated every collision, and also contributed with a couple of timely turnovers at the breakdown.
Coetzee will need to display the same sort of aggression in contact this Saturday if the Sharks hope to win the physical battle, as well as the war on the scoreboard.
