The Sharks’ clash with the British & Irish Lions will go ahead despite a Covid-19 scare in the camp of the touring team earlier on Wednesday, writes CRAIG LEWIS.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Lions confirmed that a member of its management team had tested positive for Covid-19 and Wednesday night’s game against the Sharks then became dependent on negative results from subsequent PCR testing.
The positive result was returned following a lateral flow test as part of the tour screening programme which took place on Wednesday.
“This evening’s game against the Sharks at Emirates Airline Park will still take place provided the subsequent round of PCR testing returns negative results later this afternoon. Should this be the case, the kick-off time for tonight’s game will be adjusted to 8pm [SAST]/7pm [BST],’ a statement read.
This website has now learned that the game will go ahead, which will be of great relief following a nightmarish couple of days during which, first, the Bulls-British & Irish Lions match on Saturday was called off and then the second Test between the Boks and Georgia cancelled after Covid-19 outbreaks in both camps.
Both the Lions and Sharks were said to be on their way to the stadium from around 6pm (SA time), with kick-off at 8pm.
