Sponsor gives Carter the boot

All Black great Dan Carter has been stripped of a lucrative sponsorship deal with a car company after being caught and subsequently charged for drunk-driving.

Carter, who plays Racing 92 in the French Top 14, was caught with excessive blood-alcohol levels last week and will have to appear in court after being charged for drunk-driving.

The flyhalf publicly apologised immediately after the incident, admitting 'a massive error in judgement'.

But after several meetings with his various sponsors where they discussed his actions, the 34-year-old announced that Land Rover has dropped him as brand ambassador.

'Not surprisingly, Land Rover, who for good reason have zero tolerance towards drink driving, have ended their relationship with me,' Carter posted on Facebook. 'I understand this completely and am disappointed I put them in this position.

He was tested at the roadside in Paris on Wednesday, with his alcohol level measured at 0.8 grams per litre of blood. At best he could be facing a point deduction on his driving licence and a fine or alternatively his penalty could be a two-year jail sentence.
