Stirzaker set to lead Rebels

Scrumhalf Nic Stirzaker has been confirmed as captain of the Melbourne Rebels for the 2016 Super Rugby season.

At 24, Stirzaker becomes the youngest-ever Rebels captain and will be assisted by no less than six deputies in Scott Fuglistaller, Sean McMahon, James Hanson, Mike Harris, Tamati Ellison and Jack Debreczeni.

Stirzaker, who was born in England to South African parents, has made 37 Super Rugby appearances for the Rebels and takes over the captaincy from loose forward Scott Higginbotham, who now plies his trade in Japan.

'It’s an absolute honour and thrill to be named captain. I’ve got big shoes to fill, this club has been led by some great captains over the last six years. While I’ll bring my own style to the role, it’s comforting to know that, along with the support of a very experienced leadership group, we’ve got an entire squad who share in leading this club,' said Stirzaker.

Coach Tony McGahan said Stirzaker has shown great leadership qualities and deserves his appointment.

'Nic has a maturity beyond his years, with the ability to stay calm in high-pressure situations, adapt to constantly changing scenarios and lead from the front. Through the leadership selection process, we’ve been able to establish a group of players that bring different attributes, qualities and experiences.'
