Stormers flank Rynhardt Elstadt has been ruled out for at least four months after suffering a broken leg and further damage to his ankle against the Blues on Saturday.
Elstadt left the field in the 37th minute after falling awkwardly and his injury – officially known as a maisonneuve fracture – will see him sidelined for at least four months.
The Stormers will also be without lock Eben Etzebeth (chest) and wing Kobus van Wyk (calf) for the match against the Lions at Ellis Park this weekend, as both are not yet ready for selection after suffering injuries during pre-season.
Argentinian lock Manuel Carizza's participation will be decided after a late fitness test, while Springbok prop Frans Malherbe is in line for a first start of the season after overcoming an ankle injury.
Meanwhile, veteran loose forward Schalk Burger is due back from Japan next week, with his club team set to play their final knockout match this coming weekend.
He could be available to face the Sharks next weekend, but will definitely be available for the home match against the Chiefs the following week.
