Saru CEO Jurie Roux was allegedly involved in an 'undeniable conflict of interest' when he awarded bursaries during his time as chairman of the Maties Rugby Club.
According to Netwerk24.com, Roux awarded bursaries worth hundreds of thousands of rand to players who were affiliated to a sports agency, of which he was a director.
The preliminary findings from KPMG suggest Roux awarded 19 bursaries worth R706 758 to clients of Stellar Africa Rugby, which includes Juan de Jongh, Peter Grant and Lourens Adriaanse.
As came to light at the end of January when KPMG’s initial findings were revealed, Roux already stands accused of misappropriating millions of rand to benefit the Maties Rugby Club.
The report, which also implicates Roux’s former colleague Chris de Beer, alleges that spending was 'hidden' and funds 'withheld'. It also suggests Roux used software that would not leave an audit trail in making 'unauthorised' transfers from the university's reserve funds.
Saru’s executive committee were expected to discuss the allegations of financial mismanagement levelled at Roux at a meeting on Friday, but this was postponed to a later date that has yet to be confirmed.
Recently, Saru president Oregan Hoskins moved to distance himself from the appointment of Roux as Saru CEO back in 2010.
