Former Cheetahs and Sharks star Fred Zeilinga is conducting a trial at the Lions following his return to South Africa after a stint in Japan.
A product of Glenwood High, Zeilinga played his junior rugby for the Sharks before moving into the team’s senior ranks for five years between 2011 and 2015. He then signed a three-year deal with the Cheetahs before joining Japanese side the Canon Eagles in 2018.

The 28-year-old has now completed his stay in Japan and has returned home. It has since been confirmed to SARugbymag.co.za that Zeilinga has started training with the Lions after he was given a trial period at the union to see if he can win a contract to play his rugby at Ellis Park.
Zeilinga is primarily a flyhalf, but can be utilised across the back and his versatility would strengthen the Lions’ backline depth.
