Damian de Allende got the better of Jan Serfontein in their personal battle on Saturday, writes BRENTON CHELIN.
After missing the entire pre-season schedule, De Allende put in a good shift on his return to the Stormers' starting lineup. He carried the ball strongly and linked well on attack to ensure the Stormers maintained momentum. It was his offload that set up the visitors' second try, scored by captain Duane Vermeulen.
Jan Serfontein enjoyed a rather low-key evening, and failed to make the desired impact for the Vodacom Bulls. He was well-marshalled by the Stormers defence and unable to give the home side the front-foot ball they so desperately desired – his seven carries made just 13 metres.
De Allende came within a fingertip of capping his performance with a try in the 65th minute, unfortunately he lost the ball under close attentions from the Bulls' defence.
Despite this, his contributions far outweighed those of Serfontein, as he started the year in perfect fashion, with a dominant display against the current Springbok No 12.
