‘Every game will be tough’

SARugbymag.co.za chats to Hoërskool Waterkloof's 1st XV coach Leon Coetzer about the upcoming season.

How many of last year's 1st XV players are still in the squad?
Seven, but that doesn't guarantee them a place in the starting XV this year. We still have to play trials to determine who are the best candidates to start in every game.

What has been your main focus in preparing for this season?
Skills development. For the boys to play to the maximum of their ability, their skills should be sharpened.

Who are the key players in your squad?
Our loose trio has always been one of our strongest assets, but in saying that, rugby is played by a collective group and everyone has a certain role to fulfil.

What lessons have you learned from last season?
Not much really. Every year you coach a new set of boys with different skills, weaknesses, even attitudes. So every season holds it own challenges.

What will be your toughest game this year?
Every game will be tough. We play in the Pretoria league, and I can assure you there's not one Saturday when I go to a game as a relaxed man.

What goals have you set for the season?
Sport is a profession and these days boys earn big money from early on in their careers. In a South African context, the money starts rolling in at Craven Week level. It is my duty to hone their skills, to help them reach their full potential and make sure they are in high demand for those rugby 'jobs' once they leave the school grounds.
