Former Wallabies player Israel Folau could be set to return to Australia’s NRL after St George Illawarra submitted an application to approve his signing.
The cross-code star has been playing rugby league for the Catalans Dragons in the European Super League after he was booted from rugby union following his controversial social-media posts and subsequent legal battle with RA.
However, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, the St George Dragons have formally approached the NRL to approve a two-year deal which would have Folau play for the club in the centres.
Australia Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’landys has previously indicated that there would be no chance of Folau returning to Australian rugby league in light of the controversy surrounding his religious beliefs.
The NRL will consider the application to sign Folau, but will not make any final decision until St George’s proposal has been properly reviewed.
