The Eastern Province Rugby Union’s annual general meeting is set to take place on 30 January when various financial reports are expected to be presented.

Although the meeting was initially scheduled to take place on 28 November, it was postponed at the 11th hour, leading to numerous complaints over the apparent lack of accountability for the financial crisis that has beset EP Rugby.

Eastern Cape MEC for sport, recreation, arts and culture, Pemmy Majodina, held an extraordinary stakeholder meeting with EPRU president Cheeky Watson and various other role players in Port Elizabeth on Monday, where a call was made for financial accountability.

A task team is believed to have been set up in order to look into stabilising the union, while there has also been a recommendation for credible business people to be consulted to help forge a successful way forward.

One of the top priorities continues to revolve around the need to secure funds to make payments to unpaid EP Kings players and staff, with one resolution calling for a loan application to Saru.

In the midst of the EP Rugby financial crisis, supporters have launched a campaign to aid the cash-strapped players, which has now seen over R110,000 being raised in total.

Players and staff have begun receiving cash donations, while R24,000 in Spar vouchers were set to be distributed on Tuesday.
