Concerns have again been raised over the vacant head coaching position at the Sunwolves, with Japan’s new Vodacom Super Rugby franchise yet to fill the position.

New Zealanders Robbie Deans and Mark Hammett have both been linked to the post, with the latter looking like the favourite, but as the Sunwolves' Super Rugby debut draws ever nearer, there is still a lack of clarity around the position.

‘The biggest worry is that they are yet to appoint a coach,’ New Zealand rugby chief executive Steve Tew commented. ‘That's the most pressing problem and we're told that it will be resolved before Christmas. Clearly that's already too late.’

The Sunwolves will kick off their Super Rugby campaign against the Lions on 27 February, and despite the delays over appointing a coach, Tew said there were at least some positive signs coming out of Japan, including an improved player roster.

‘The Japanese are working very hard to get up to speed and my South African colleagues continue to assure me that the Kings will be fine.’
