Sharks wing Makazole Mapimpi was the best player on show during the fourth round of the Vodacom Super Rugby tournament, writes JON CARDINELLI.
Last year, Rassie Erasmus described Mapimpi as the Springboks’ most improved player. The wing scored six tries at the World Cup in Japan and became the first South African player to score a try in a World Cup final. After two seasons with the Boks, he has dotted down 14 times in 14 matches.

Has he showed any signs of complacency in 2020? The numbers suggest not.
Mapimpi has scored four tries for the Sharks in four matches. Only Brumbies hooker Folau Fainga’a (five) has scored more in this year’s Vodacom Super Rugby tournament.

Mapimpi scored two tries against the Rebels in Ballarat to help the Sharks win 36-24. A break down the left-hand touchline should have culminated in a third, but after crossing the tryline, he went out of his way to gift teammate Curwin Bosch the five-pointer.
Mapimpi beat five defenders, made two clean breaks and finished with 111 running metres on Saturday.
